Many business owners tell me the same thing about Gemini: “It’s Google, so if I rank on Google, I’ll show up in Gemini too.” It sounds logical. Gemini is built by Google, and it can search Google before it answers.
But when you look at the sites Gemini actually cites, the picture is more interesting. A handful of community, video and reference sites take a huge share of its attention, and most of the rest are review sites and big retailers. Your own website is competing for a very small slice.
In this article, I will walk you through the newest data on the websites Gemini cites most, explain why its sources look the way they do, and show you how to turn that list into a short, realistic plan. In brief: for Gemini, where you are talked about matters as much as what you publish.
How Ahrefs built the Gemini most-cited list
The numbers in this article come from Ahrefs’ report on the 50 most-cited websites in Gemini, written by Ryan Law. It was first published on June 1, 2026 and refreshed on September 2, 2026. Ahrefs says the page is updated every month by its own AI agent, so the exact figures may have moved by the time you read this.
Here is how the list was put together, in plain words:
- Data source: Ahrefs Brand Radar, which records how AI assistants respond to real, search-backed queries.
- Scope: United States, all topics, September 2026 snapshot.
- Size: every domain Gemini cited across more than 3 million US queries.
- Main metric: “mention share,” which is a domain’s citations as a percentage of the total citations of the top 50 sources.
That last point is important, so let me explain it. Mention share is not a share of every citation Gemini ever made. It is a share of the citations that went to the top 50 domains. So when you read “Reddit has 28.5%,” think of it as “Reddit gets 28.5% of the attention among the 50 biggest sources.” The full long tail of smaller sites sits outside that number.
The sites Gemini cites most, at a glance
I won’t repeat the full list of 50 here. Ahrefs keeps that up to date on its own page. Instead, here are the top ten from the September 2026 snapshot, with the number of distinct pages Gemini cited from each.
| Rank | Domain | Mention share | Distinct pages cited | What kind of site it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | reddit.com | 28.5% | 388,496 | Community forum |
| 2 | youtube.com | 14.6% | 187,970 | Video platform (Google-owned) |
| 3 | en.wikipedia.org | 8.8% | 72,435 | Encyclopedia |
| 4 | walmart.com | 2.8% | 36,230 | Retailer |
| 5 | forbes.com | 2.7% | 5,497 | Publisher |
| 6 | edmunds.com | 1.9% | 16,153 | Car reviews and pricing |
| 7 | healthline.com | 1.8% | 6,542 | Health publisher |
| 8 | kbb.com | 1.8% | 15,744 | Car values and reviews |
| 9 | pcmag.com | 1.6% | 4,721 | Tech reviews |
| 10 | target.com | 1.6% | 18,618 | Retailer |

Ryan Law sums up why this list deserves attention:
“Gemini is everywhere Google is, which makes the handful of sites it trusts surprisingly powerful.”
— Ahrefs, The 50 Most-Cited Websites in Gemini
The audience is large. Ahrefs notes that on Alphabet’s Q4 2025 earnings call, Sundar Pichai said the Gemini app had passed 750 million monthly active users, up from 650 million a quarter earlier.
Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia take half of Gemini’s attention
The first thing that jumps out is concentration. Together, Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia account for 51.9 percentage points of mention share. Every other site in the top 50 sits between 0.5% and 2.8%.
Let me explain what each of the big three tells you.
Reddit: Gemini wants real people’s experience
Reddit is far ahead at 28.5%, with nearly 390,000 different pages cited. That is not a few famous threads being reused. It is a huge spread of discussions. When someone asks Gemini “Is this mattress good for back pain?” or “Which CRM do small agencies actually like?”, a Reddit thread full of first-hand opinions is exactly the kind of evidence it reaches for.
For a brand, this means the conversation about you on Reddit is part of your Gemini visibility, whether you take part or not. I cover how to take part properly in my guide on why Reddit mentions shape AI answers.
YouTube: the Google-owned source in the top three
YouTube is second at 14.6%. It is also owned by Google, which makes it the only company property near the top. (The next Google property, the Google Play store, is down at number 21 with 1.0%.) For how-to, product demo and review questions, a video is often the most useful answer, and Gemini seems to agree.
If your brand has no presence on YouTube, either your own channel or creators who review your product, you are missing one of the two largest doors into Gemini. My guide to ranking your videos on YouTube is a good place to start.
Wikipedia: the fact layer
Wikipedia is third at 8.8%. It is where Gemini goes for definitions, company facts and background. You can’t write your own Wikipedia article, and you shouldn’t try. But you can make sure the facts about your brand are consistent in the places Wikipedia editors and knowledge graphs rely on. I explain this in Wikidata and Wikipedia for brands.
The second tier: reviewers, retailers and car sites
Below the big three, the list is mostly made up of sites that help people compare and buy. I grouped the full top 50 by type. This is my own rough grouping, not something Ahrefs published, so treat the counts as approximate.
| Source type | Examples in Gemini’s top 50 | Approx. count | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community and UGC | Reddit, Medium, Lemon8 | 3 | Gemini values first-hand opinions |
| Video and apps | YouTube, Google Play, Apple App Store | 3 | Demos and app listings answer “how” and “which app” questions |
| Reference | Wikipedia, wikiHow, PubMed Central | 3 | Facts and step-by-step help |
| Retailers | Walmart, Target, eBay, Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowe’s, Ulta | 7+ | Product details, prices and customer reviews |
| Product review publishers | PCMag, CNET, TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, Reviewed, OutdoorGearLab, RunRepeat | 7+ | Hands-on testing carries weight |
| Automotive | Edmunds, KBB, Car and Driver, Cars.com, CarBuzz, RepairPal | 6+ | Car research is a heavy Gemini use case |
| Health | Healthline, WebMD, GoodRx, Medical News Today | 4+ | Established health publishers dominate health answers |
| Trust and finance | Trustpilot, BBB, Bankrate, WalletHub | 4 | Reputation and money questions go to known names |
Two things stand out to me here.
First, brand websites are almost absent, unless the brand is a giant retailer. Gemini does not mainly cite the company selling the product. It cites the people reviewing it, discussing it or selling it alongside competitors.
Second, hands-on review sites punch above their size. PCMag has only about 4,700 cited pages, yet it ranks ninth. A small number of very useful test-based pages can earn a lot of citations.
Why Gemini’s sources look so Google-shaped
To understand this list, it helps to know how Gemini finds web pages in the first place. Google’s developer documentation describes a feature called “grounding with Google Search.” Grounding simply means checking an answer against live web results before writing it.
“Grounding with Google Search connects a Gemini model to real-time, publicly-available web content.”
— Google, Grounding with Google Search (Firebase AI Logic docs)
According to that page (last updated October 14, 2026), the model decides whether a search would improve its answer. If it does search, it writes one or more search queries, reads the results and builds its answer from them. The response then carries a list of the queries it ran and the web sources it used.
That developer documentation describes the Gemini API, not every detail of the consumer Gemini app. Still, it tells us something useful: Gemini’s web sources come through Google Search. That explains why sites that are already strong in Google, such as Reddit, YouTube and the big review publishers, also do well in Gemini.
But being found is not the same as being chosen. A useful comparison comes from ChatGPT. In a September 2025 study, Ahrefs found that only about 10% of the URLs ChatGPT cited for short-tail queries appeared in Google’s top 10, even though ChatGPT may draw on Google results. An assistant adds its own selection step on top of the search results. I have not seen a matching public study for Gemini, so I would not assume your Google position carries straight over into Gemini’s answer.
The same page notes one technical detail many site owners miss: grounding does not use pages that have disallowed Google-Extended in robots.txt. Google-Extended is the robots.txt control that tells Google whether your content may be used by its AI models. If you blocked it to keep your content out of AI training, check whether you are also keeping it out of Gemini’s answers. Google’s AI features documentation explains that Google-Extended covers training and grounding in some of Google’s other systems, while Googlebot rules still control Search itself.
I go deeper into the app side in my guide on how brands show up in the Gemini app.
Which Gemini sources you can actually influence
A list like this is only useful if you know what to do with it. Some of these sites you can’t touch. Some you can earn your way into. A few you can control directly. Here is how I would sort them.
| Source | Can you influence it? | Realistic approach |
|---|---|---|
| Partly | Join relevant threads as a real person, answer questions honestly, disclose your affiliation | |
| YouTube | Yes | Publish your own demos and comparisons; send products to relevant creators |
| Wikipedia | Barely | Earn independent press coverage; keep Wikidata and official profiles consistent |
| Retailers (Walmart, Target, Home Depot) | Yes, if you sell there | Complete product listings, accurate specs, steady flow of genuine reviews |
| Review publishers (PCMag, CNET, RunRepeat) | Partly | Pitch products for testing; give reviewers specs, samples and access |
| Trustpilot, BBB | Yes | Claim profiles, ask customers for reviews, respond to complaints |
| Google Play / App Store | Yes, if you have an app | Clear descriptions, regular updates, active review responses |
| Forbes, Healthline, WebMD | Hard | Expert commentary, original data and digital PR |
If you want a deeper framework for sorting sources like this, I explain it in my article on which AI citation sources you can actually influence.
How Gemini’s source mix compares with Copilot and Grok
Ahrefs publishes the same kind of list for other assistants, using the same Brand Radar method. Putting them side by side shows how different each assistant’s “taste” is.
| Assistant | Top 3 sources (mention share) | Reddit’s position | Character of the list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini (Sept 2026) | Reddit 28.5%, YouTube 14.6%, Wikipedia 8.8% | #1 | Community, video, reviews |
| Copilot (Sept 2026) | Amazon 16.8%, Walmart 12.6%, Wikipedia 7.6% | Not in top 50 | Shopping and reference |
| Grok (June 2026) | Reddit 16.3%, YouTube 15.1%, Facebook 13.9% | #1 | Social platforms |
Sources: Ahrefs’ most-cited lists for Gemini, Copilot and Grok. Note that the Grok snapshot is from a different month.
The lesson is simple: one AI plan does not fit every assistant. Gemini rewards community and video presence. Copilot rewards being in big retail catalogs. Grok rewards social platforms. I break those down in my posts on the websites Microsoft Copilot cites most and the websites Grok cites most. If you are also tracking Google’s other AI surfaces, compare this list with the sites AI Overviews cite most, and read why each AI assistant cites different sources.
Reading Gemini’s list for your own niche
The Ahrefs list covers all topics. Your customers ask about one topic. So the next step is to build a smaller list for your own niche. Here is an example of how that might look.
Example: a running shoe brand (hypothetical)
Imagine a small running shoe brand. It picks 40 questions its buyers might ask Gemini, such as “best running shoes for flat feet” or “are carbon plate shoes worth it for beginners.” It runs each question once a week for four weeks, which gives 160 answers. It writes down every cited domain.
Say the tally looks like this (these numbers are made up for illustration):
- Reddit cited in 70 of 160 answers (44%)
- YouTube cited in 48 answers (30%)
- RunRepeat cited in 41 answers (26%)
- A big sporting goods retailer cited in 22 answers (14%)
- The brand’s own site cited in 3 answers (2%)
This tells the brand something the national list can’t. In its niche, a single test-based review site (RunRepeat, which also appears in Gemini’s overall top 50) matters almost as much as YouTube. Getting a pair tested there could be worth more than ten new blog posts on its own site.
The point of the example is the method, not the numbers. Run your own questions, count the domains and let that guide your effort. If you don’t want to do this by hand, look at the AI visibility tools that track brand mentions.
Turning Gemini’s citations into a mention plan
Here is how I would turn all of this into work you can do over the next 60 days.
- Check your technical access first. Confirm your important pages are indexed in Google and that your robots.txt is not blocking
Google-Extendedunless you have decided that on purpose. - Build your niche list. Pick 30–50 real buyer questions, run them in Gemini and record every cited domain for a few weeks.
- Sort the domains into three groups: can’t touch, can earn, can control.
- Fix what you control. Update retailer listings, app store pages, Trustpilot and BBB profiles. Make sure product specs and prices match everywhere.
- Start on video. Publish two or three genuinely useful videos that answer your top questions: demos, comparisons, setup guides.
- Join the Reddit conversation. Find the threads Gemini already cites and add honest, useful answers from a real account, with your affiliation disclosed.
- Pitch the reviewers. Send samples and clear spec sheets to the review sites that showed up in your niche list.
- Re-run your questions monthly and compare the domain counts. That is your scorecard.
For the PR side of step 7, my guide to digital PR for AI visibility goes into pitching in more detail.
What the Gemini list can’t tell you
I like this data, but I treat it as direction, not hard science. Here are the limits to keep in mind.
- One month, one country. The snapshot is US-only and from September 2026. Gemini answers in India, the UK or Australia may lean on very different sites.
- It moves every month. Ahrefs shows rank changes month to month. A site can climb or fall a lot in a short time.
- The denominator is the top 50. Mention share describes how attention splits among the biggest sources, not the whole web.
- The query set shapes the result. Ahrefs uses search-backed queries. Your customers may ask longer, more personal questions that pull in different sources.
- Citation is not a click. Being cited does not mean the user visited the page. The value is in being part of the answer.
- No niche or source-type breakdown. Ahrefs does not split this list by industry, which is why I suggest building your own.
Questions marketers ask about Gemini’s most-cited sites
Does ranking well on Google guarantee citations in Gemini?
No. Gemini uses Google Search to ground its answers, so strong Google rankings help. But Gemini picks only a few sources per answer, and it clearly favors Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia and review sites. You need presence on those as well.
Why does Reddit get so many Gemini citations?
Reddit is full of first-hand experiences on almost every topic, and it is strong in Google Search. Gemini cited nearly 390,000 different Reddit pages in the September 2026 snapshot, so it is a broad pattern, not a few famous threads.
If I block Google-Extended, will I disappear from Gemini?
It can reduce your chances. Google’s documentation says grounding with Google Search does not use pages that disallow Google-Extended in robots.txt. Blocking it does not affect your normal Google Search rankings.
Should a small business focus on YouTube for Gemini?
If your customers ask how-to or comparison questions, yes. YouTube holds 14.6% of mention share in Gemini’s top 50, and it is one of the few top sources you can publish on directly.
How often should I re-check Gemini’s citations for my niche?
Once a month is enough for most businesses. Ahrefs refreshes its list monthly, and answers vary from day to day, so weekly checks mostly show noise.
Where I’d start with Gemini visibility this month
So, to bring it together. Gemini leans heavily on Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia, then on review sites and big retailers. Your own website is one small voice in that mix. The good news is that several of these sources are open to you: video, retailer listings, review profiles and honest community answers.
If I had one month, I would check Google-Extended, build a 40-question niche list, and publish two useful videos. That alone puts you ahead of most competitors who are still waiting for their blog to “rank in Gemini.”
