2024 was the year Google rewired how it judges quality. It opened with an unusually complex core update, which folded the helpful content system into core ranking and arrived alongside three new spam policies. In May, AI Overviews reached every searcher in the US. The year then closed with three core updates in under four months and a spam update right before Christmas.

For many site owners 2024 felt relentless. But the changes followed a clear thread: less tolerance for scaled, unoriginal content and for content that borrows another site's reputation, together with a results page increasingly shaped by AI.

This review lists every confirmed 2024 update and policy change in date order, explains the March overhaul, and summarises what you should take from the year. Each item links to our detailed explainer where one exists.

Key Takeaways

  • The March 2024 core update ran for 45 days (5 March – 19 April) and made the helpful content system part of core ranking.
  • Three new spam policies were announced in March: scaled content abuse, expired domain abuse and site reputation abuse (enforced from 5 May).
  • Google said the changes would cut low-quality, unoriginal content in results by 40%, later reporting 45%.
  • AI Overviews began rolling out to everyone in the US on 14 May 2024.
  • Core updates followed in August, November and December, with spam updates in June and December.

March 2024: the big overhaul

The March 2024 core update was unusual in several ways. It lasted 45 days on the dashboard, it ran alongside a spam update for its first two weeks, and it changed how helpfulness is assessed. Google's ranking systems guide now says that in March 2024 the helpful content system "evolved and became part of our core ranking systems". There are no more separate helpful content updates.

Google was also unusually specific about the expected effect:

“You’ll now see 45% less low-quality, unoriginal content in search results”

— Google, The Keyword blog (April 2024 update note), New ways we're tackling spammy, low-quality content on Search (March 2024)

The original March announcement had said the changes would "collectively reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in search results by 40%". The 45% figure was added after the rollout completed. These are Google's own figures; there is no independent way to verify them.

The three new spam policies

  • Scaled content abuse: producing many pages primarily to manipulate rankings, however they are made (AI, human or both). It replaced the older policy on spammy automatically generated content. See scaled content abuse cleanup.
  • Expired domain abuse: buying expired domains and repurposing them mainly to rank low-value content on the old domain's reputation.
  • Site reputation abuse: third-party content published on a host site to exploit its ranking signals. Google published it two months before enforcement on 5 May, and clarified it in November 2024.

May: AI Overviews arrive

On 14 May Google began rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the US, with expansion to other countries from August. This was a change to the results page, not to ranking, but it changed click patterns for many informational queries. Our AI search rollout timeline covers the details, and AI Overviews SEO covers how to be cited.

August to December: three core updates

Google's August 2024 core update announcement said it had taken feedback from small and independent publishers into account. Many of those publishers had reported losses after the September 2023 helpful content update. A separate four-day ranking issue opened the same day, complicating early analysis. The November core update ran for over three weeks, and the December core update began only a week after November finished, followed immediately by a global spam update.

Lessons from 2024

  1. Quality is now judged inside core updates. Treat any helpful-content-style problem as a core update problem. See content quality audit after a core update.
  2. Audit how content is produced at scale. The method does not matter to the policy; the purpose and value do.
  3. Review partner and sponsored sections on your domain against the site reputation policy.
  4. Separate ranking from presentation. AI Overviews can reduce clicks without any ranking change.
  5. Plan for back-to-back updates late in the year. November, December core and December spam came in quick succession.

Common mistakes in 2024

  • Judging the March core update in March, when it ran until 19 April.
  • Assuming AI-written content is automatically a violation, or automatically safe.
  • Buying expired domains to redirect or rebuild for their old links.
  • Blaming core updates for click losses caused by AI Overviews.

What came next

2025 brought three core updates, a long spam update and AI Mode. Read the 2025 review, or go back to the 2023 review. Our spam policies guide and core updates guide explain the systems in depth.
