Since Elon Musk’s xAI launched Grokipedia in October 2025, I have had a steady stream of questions from clients. The most common one is: “Do we now need a Grokipedia page as well as a Wikipedia page?” Some have even asked if they should hire someone to “get them on Grokipedia.”

It is a fair question. Wikipedia has a huge influence on how search engines and AI tools describe brands, so any rival encyclopedia deserves a look. But the data tells a more nuanced story than the headlines.

Let me explain what Grokipedia is, how it compares with Wikipedia on size, traffic and AI citations, what critics have found, how to check what it says about your brand, and whether you can correct it. Then I will give you my plain verdict on how much time it deserves.

What Grokipedia is and how its articles get written

Grokipedia is an online encyclopedia built by xAI, the AI company behind the Grok chatbot. It launched on October 27, 2025, labeled as version 0.1. According to Straight Arrow News, the site briefly crashed after going live, then came back with about 885,000 articles.

The big difference from Wikipedia is who writes the articles. Wikipedia is written and edited by volunteers. Grokipedia articles are generated by Grok, xAI’s large language model. As NPR reported on October 29, 2025, readers can’t edit pages directly. Instead, they can ask questions and submit corrections through a form.

Musk positioned it as a fix for what he sees as bias on Wikipedia. NPR quotes his stated goal as “an open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge.” Critics, as we will see, raised bias concerns of their own.

Ahrefs summed up the model well in its March 2026 study:

“Grokipedia seems to represent a new model for wikis: AI-generated content designed for AI consumption.”

— Ryan Law, Wikipedia vs. Grokipedia (Ahrefs)

Here is how the two encyclopedias differ in the ways that matter to a brand:

FeatureWikipediaGrokipedia
Who writes articlesVolunteer editorsxAI’s Grok model
Can you edit a page?Yes, under strict rules (and you shouldn’t edit your own company’s page)No; you can only suggest corrections
How disputes are handledPublic talk pages and editor discussionDecided by the AI; little public visibility
Rules for companiesNotability and conflict-of-interest policiesNot described in the coverage I reviewed
ImagesCommonNone, per Ahrefs’ sample
Main brand riskOutdated or poorly sourced factsAI errors, bias and copied mistakes that may not get fixed

The editing difference is the one I would underline. On Wikipedia, a mistake about your company can be challenged in public by anyone with a good source, and the discussion is visible. On Grokipedia, you submit a suggestion and wait. That makes the quality of the sources Grok reads, including Wikipedia, even more important.

In plain words: it reads like it was written by an AI, for other AIs to read. That matters for brands, because AI tools are exactly where you want accurate information about you.

Grokipedia vs Wikipedia: size and growth

The most detailed public comparison I have found is the Ahrefs study Wikipedia vs. Grokipedia by Ryan Law and Xibeijia Guan, published March 3, 2026. Here are the headline numbers, which I summarize rather than copy in full:

Measure (Ahrefs, March 2026)WikipediaGrokipedia
Pages in Ahrefs’ data3,725,102 crawled pages737,930 published pages
Estimated monthly organic trafficAbout 2.1 billionAbout 1.3 million
Keywords ranked for45.6 million1.2 million
Referring domainsAbout 2.02 million8,016
AI citations trackedAbout 24.9 millionAbout 356,200
Average page age (sample)About 9.3 years67 days
Average images per page (sample)240

Two caveats. First, the Wikipedia figure is pages Ahrefs crawled, not the full count of English Wikipedia articles. Second, all traffic numbers are Ahrefs estimates, not data from either site. I treat them as a fair comparison of scale, not exact counts.

At the time, Ahrefs found Grokipedia was adding almost 6,000 pages a day and projected it could pass Wikipedia’s page count around July 2027 if that pace held.

The growth may have stalled

That “if” turned out to matter. In August 2026, Nieman Lab reported research by Renée DiResta and Ronald Robertson of the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, published in Lawfare, finding that Grokipedia stopped editing itself and processing suggested edits in April 2026. Nieman Lab quotes them:

“As far as we can tell, no entry has changed in more than three months.”

— Renée DiResta and Ronald Robertson, quoted by Nieman Lab

So the July 2027 projection is unlikely unless updates resume. For brands, a frozen encyclopedia has a specific risk: if it says something outdated about you, it may stay outdated.

Citation and traffic data compared

For a brand, two numbers matter most: how many people see Grokipedia pages, and how often AI tools cite them.

Traffic

Ahrefs estimated Grokipedia’s organic search traffic at about 1.3 million a month in March 2026, around 1,615 times less than Wikipedia, and said it had already fallen to half its peak. Nieman Lab cites Similarweb data showing about 6.7 million total visits in June 2026, ranking it around 11,022nd globally. Those figures measure different things (organic search versus all visits), so don’t compare them directly. Either way, it is a small site next to Wikipedia.

Some individual pages do get large audiences, though. Nieman Lab reports, from Grokipedia’s own page-statistics API, over 83 million views for the Barack Obama entry and 16 million lifetime views for Musk’s entry. Popular topics attract attention. A small business page is unlikely to.

AI citations

This is where Grokipedia is more interesting. Its human audience is small, but AI tools do cite it:

  • Ahrefs (March 2026): about 356,200 AI citations for Grokipedia versus about 24.9 million for Wikipedia, roughly 70 times fewer. Per page, Grokipedia earned about 0.48 citations against Wikipedia’s 6.69.
  • Which AI tools: Ahrefs found ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode cite Grokipedia most, followed by Copilot and Gemini. It is rarely cited in AI Overviews, which the author links to its weak Google rankings.
  • Earlier counts: Let’s Data Science reported in February 2026 that Ahrefs had found about 263,000 ChatGPT responses referencing Grokipedia out of 13.6 million prompts, and that Profound estimated Grokipedia at 0.01–0.02% of daily ChatGPT citations.

So Grokipedia is a small but real source in AI answers, mostly in ChatGPT and AI Mode. If you want to see which domains each AI platform leans on, my analysis of the sites Grok cites most and how much AI platforms’ sources overlap give more context.

Who cites Grokipedia, and does Grok itself favor it?

You might expect Grok, xAI’s own chatbot, to lean heavily on Grokipedia. The Ahrefs study doesn’t break out Grok as a top citer; its platform list is led by ChatGPT and AI Mode. I could not find a reliable public dataset on how often Grok cites Grokipedia specifically, so I won’t guess.

What matters more for most brands is visibility in Grok overall. My guide to brand visibility in Grok covers how Grok finds sources, including its use of X posts.

The wider point is this: AI tools pick sources partly based on search rankings and partly on their own retrieval systems. Grokipedia ranks poorly in Google, which keeps it out of AI Overviews. ChatGPT appears less bothered by that, which is why it shows up there more. My explainer on ChatGPT query fan-out explains how ChatGPT searches behind the scenes.

Accuracy, bias and copying concerns

Grokipedia drew criticism from the day it launched. Here is a summary of what reputable outlets reported:

ConcernWhat was reportedSource
Copying WikipediaSome articles were nearly identical to Wikipedia’s, and some carried a note that content was adapted from WikipediaNPR; The Verge via SAN
BiasThe Washington Post found entries that echoed Musk’s views and framed contested issues through a right-leaning lensVia SAN
Factual errorsThe Post flagged inaccuracies; Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger posted examples of factual mistakesVia SAN
AI-heavy editingTow Center research found Grok-generated edits made up more than three-quarters of suggested edits by DecemberVia Nieman Lab
Stopped updatingNo edits or processed suggestions since April 2026Lawfare research via Nieman Lab
Similarity to Wikipedia83% of 10,000 topic pairs scored as strongly similar to Wikipedia in Ahrefs’ analysisAhrefs

The Wikimedia Foundation’s response, reported by NPR, is worth reading because it highlights the irony:

“This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”

— Wikimedia Foundation, quoted by NPR

For brands, the practical takeaway is simple. Because much of Grokipedia mirrors Wikipedia, your Wikipedia and Wikidata presence probably shapes your Grokipedia entry more than anything you do on Grokipedia itself. That is good news: you only need to get the original sources right. My guide on Wikidata for brands explains how.

Checking what Grokipedia says about your brand

Most small and mid-sized businesses won’t have a Grokipedia page at all. Larger brands, public companies and well-known founders might. Here is how I would check, step by step:

  1. Search Grokipedia for your brand name, your founder’s name and your main product names.
  2. Search Google for site:grokipedia.com "your brand" to find pages that mention you but aren’t about you, such as industry or competitor pages.
  3. Compare each page with Wikipedia. If the Grokipedia text mirrors Wikipedia, any error probably came from there.
  4. List factual problems: wrong founding date, old CEO, merged with another company by mistake, outdated products.
  5. Check AI tools. Ask ChatGPT and Grok about your brand and see whether the same errors appear, and whether Grokipedia is cited.
  6. Record what you find with dates and screenshots, so you can track changes later.

If this sounds like a wider brand audit, it is. My guide to tracking your brand’s visibility in AI search covers the tools for checking many AI platforms at once.

Example: deciding what to fix first

Hypothetical scenario. A mid-sized software company finds three problems:

  • Grokipedia lists a CEO who left in 2023. Wikipedia lists the correct CEO. Priority: low, because the error is on a low-traffic, possibly frozen page, and the main source is already right.
  • Wikidata lists the wrong headquarters city. Grokipedia and ChatGPT both repeat it. Priority: high, because fixing Wikidata feeds many systems at once.
  • ChatGPT describes a product the company discontinued. Priority: high, because this is where buyers actually ask. Update your own site and press materials so fresh sources say the right thing.

Can you correct a Grokipedia entry?

In theory, yes. NPR reported that Grokipedia offers tools to ask questions and submit corrections. You can’t edit pages directly, as you can on Wikipedia.

In practice, there are two problems:

  • It may not be processing suggestions. If the Lawfare findings reported by Nieman Lab are right, suggestions submitted since April 2026 may not be acted on at all.
  • Grok decides. Suggestions are reviewed by the AI, not a community of editors with a public talk page. You have little visibility into why a correction was accepted or rejected.

So my advice is: submit a clear correction with public sources if there is a real error, because it costs only a few minutes. Then spend your real effort on the sources that feed everything else: your own website, Wikidata, an accurate Wikipedia article if you qualify, and Google’s knowledge panel (which has its own feedback process). My guide on fixing AI brand misinformation walks through this.

One warning: don’t try to “seed” Grokipedia or any wiki with promotional content. Google’s guidance on AI-generated content is clear that mass-produced content without value for users is a spam risk, and AI tools are getting better at spotting promotional sources.

Questions brands ask about Grokipedia

Should my business create a Grokipedia page?

You can’t create one directly. Pages are generated by xAI’s systems. The best way to influence what an AI encyclopedia says is to make sure accurate, well-sourced information exists on your site and in public sources like Wikidata.

Does Grokipedia send traffic to brand websites?

Very little, based on available data. Its own organic traffic was estimated at about 1.3 million visits a month in March 2026, and most visits go to big topics, not company pages.

Do AI tools trust Grokipedia more than Wikipedia?

No. Ahrefs found Wikipedia had about 70 times more AI citations. ChatGPT and Google AI Mode cite Grokipedia most, but still far less than Wikipedia.

Is Grokipedia still being updated?

Research reported by Nieman Lab in August 2026 found no changes to entries since April 2026. That could change, so check the site directly before relying on it.

Should I monitor Grokipedia like I monitor reviews?

A quarterly check is enough for most brands. Monitor more often only if you are a well-known company or founder with an existing Grokipedia page.

My verdict: should brands care about Grokipedia?

In brief: care a little, act mostly elsewhere.

Grokipedia is a small source with a small audience, and it may have stopped updating. But it does show up in ChatGPT and AI Mode citations, and it largely mirrors Wikipedia. That combination means the smart move is not to chase Grokipedia itself, but to make sure the sources it copies from are accurate.

Here is how I would split the effort for a typical brand:

  • Most of your effort: your website, Google Business Profile, Wikidata and consistent profiles. See my guide to Google’s Knowledge Graph for the full entity checklist.
  • Some effort: tracking how ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini and Grok describe you.
  • A small, regular check: Grokipedia, once a quarter, with a correction request if something is wrong.
