Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity the same question and you will often get three different answers with three different sets of sources. That is not random. Each system decides where to look, what to read and what to cite using a mix of training data, search indexes, its own crawlers and licensed partner content.

If you want your brand or content to appear in AI answers, you need a working model of that process. Not the internal maths, which no vendor publishes, but the practical pipeline: how a question becomes searches, how searches become a shortlist of pages, and how a few passages become the answer.

This guide explains where AI gets its answers in 2026, how the major platforms differ, what the research says about the most-cited sources, and what you can do to become one of them.

Key Takeaways

  • AI answers come from two places: knowledge learned during training, and documents retrieved live from the web at the moment of the question.
  • Retrieval usually starts from a search index (Google's, Bing's or the assistant's own), so being crawled and indexed remains the entry ticket.
  • Modern AI search breaks questions into many sub-queries, so pages that answer a specific sub-question clearly can be cited even without ranking first for the main query.
  • Citation patterns differ by platform and change over time; studies show heavy use of Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and news sources.
  • Independent, consistent, specific information about your brand across the web makes you more likely to be retrieved and trusted.

The Two Ways AI Knows Things

Training data is what a model learned before its knowledge cut-off: a vast snapshot of public web pages, books, licensed data and other material. It shapes the model's background knowledge, including what it "believes" about well-known brands. It changes only when a new model is trained.

Retrieval (often called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG) is what happens when the assistant searches the web or a partner database, reads the results and writes an answer grounded in them. This is where citations come from, and it is the part you can influence quickly.

OpenAI describes its approach for ChatGPT search directly:

“leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners, to provide the information users are looking for.”

— OpenAI, Introducing ChatGPT search

OpenAI also operates OAI-SearchBot, which it says is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." If that crawler is blocked, your pages are less likely to be retrieved. Our guide to AI crawlers lists the user agents to allow.

How a Question Becomes a Cited Answer

  1. Interpret the question. The system works out intent, entities and constraints (location, budget, timeframe).
  2. Decide whether to search. Simple or timeless questions may be answered from training alone. Anything current, local, commercial or niche usually triggers retrieval.
  3. Fan out into sub-queries. The question is broken into several searches covering different angles.
  4. Retrieve candidates. Each sub-query returns pages from an index. Only crawlable, indexed pages are eligible.
  5. Select passages. The model reads candidates and picks passages that directly answer parts of the question.
  6. Write and cite. It composes an answer and links to some (not all) of the pages it used.

Google described step three for AI Mode at I/O 2025:

“Under the hood, AI Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics”

— Google, AI Mode in Google Search

Google's Search Central documentation adds that to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional special requirements. Our guides to getting cited in AI Overviews and Google AI Mode go deeper on Google specifically.

What the Research Says About Most-Cited Sources

Several studies give a sense of the source mix, though all are snapshots and methods differ:

  • Pew Research Center (2025): In Google searches tracked in March 2025, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most commonly linked sites in AI summaries and standard results. Together they made up 15% of AI summary sources.
  • Semrush (July to October 2025): Across 230,000+ prompts, Wikipedia and Reddit led ChatGPT citations early on, but their share dropped sharply from mid-September. LinkedIn was cited in nearly 15% of Google AI Mode responses.
  • Muck Rack Generative Pulse (May 2026): Analysing more than 25 million links, it reported that earned media made up 84% of AI citations and journalism 27% of cited sources. It also found big differences between models.
Model (Muck Rack, May 2026)Responses with citationsAvg. citations per responseMost-cited domain
ChatGPT96%5Wikipedia
Gemini82%8Reddit
Claude55%13PubMed Central

The lesson is not "post on Reddit and Wikipedia". It is that AI systems lean on sources that are broad, independent, frequently updated and corroborated. That is why so many brands are cited via third-party sites rather than their own.

How to Become a Source AI Chooses

  • Be retrievable. Allow search and AI retrieval crawlers, fix indexing problems and keep key content in server-rendered HTML.
  • Answer sub-questions cleanly. Use headings that match real questions and open each section with a direct, self-contained answer. Our guide to content chunking for AI explains how.
  • Add something new. Original data, first-hand testing and expert insight give AI a reason to cite you over a page that repeats the consensus. See our guide to information gain.
  • Be corroborated. Earn mentions in press, reviews and communities so independent sources confirm what your site says.
  • Keep facts consistent. Align your site, Google Business Profile, directories and entity databases. Our guide to entity SEO covers the foundations.
  • Stay fresh. Update statistics and dates; Muck Rack found most cited journalism was published within the previous 12 months.

Common Mistakes

  • Blocking all AI bots. Blocking training crawlers is a business choice; blocking retrieval crawlers removes you from live answers.
  • Treating AI as one channel. Each platform retrieves differently. Track them separately.
  • Chasing one viral study. Citation patterns shift quickly, as the Semrush data on ChatGPT shows. Build durable signals instead.
  • Writing vague, all-purpose pages. AI picks passages, not pages. Specific answers win.
  • Ignoring what others say about you. Your own site is only one input.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to find sources?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search leverages third-party search providers as well as content provided directly by partners. It also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI does not publish a full list of providers, so allow OAI-SearchBot and stay well indexed in both Google and Bing.

Why does AI cite Reddit and Wikipedia so often?

They cover a huge range of topics, are frequently updated and are widely referenced. Pew Research found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most commonly linked sites in Google's AI summaries in its 2025 study. Citation patterns shift over time and differ by platform, though.

Do I need to rank on page one to be cited by AI?

Ranking helps because retrieval often starts from a search index, but it is not a guarantee. AI tools may run several sub-queries and pick passages that answer a specific part of the question, which can surface pages that do not rank first for the main query.

What is query fan-out?

It is Google's term for how AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and runs many related searches at once, then combines the results. It means your content can be retrieved for a sub-question even if the user's original wording never appears on your page.

Can I see which of my pages AI tools cite?

Partly. Bing Webmaster Tools offers an AI Performance report showing citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Search Console Performance report, but without a separate filter. Third-party AI visibility tools can track citations for your chosen prompts.

Make Your Content Easy to Choose

AI assistants pick sources they can reach, understand and trust. Make sure the right crawlers can access your pages, structure content so each section answers a real question, add original value and earn independent corroboration across the web.
