Instagram is no longer just a place to post pretty photos. For most brands it is a full-funnel ad channel: Reels and Stories for reach, feed and carousel ads for consideration, and shopping and lead ads for conversions. All of it runs through the same Meta Ads Manager you use for Facebook.

The challenge is that Meta has changed a lot. Campaign setup now leans heavily on Advantage+ automation, placements have been added and removed, and the creative that works on Instagram is very different from a desktop banner.

This guide covers the Instagram ad placements and formats available in 2026, how costs are decided, how to set up a campaign step by step, and the creative and measurement habits that separate profitable accounts from expensive ones.

Key Takeaways

  • Instagram ads are bought in Meta Ads Manager, using the same campaigns, auction and pixel as Facebook ads.
  • Placements include Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore home, profile feed, profile reels and search results; Meta announced the retirement of the Explore Feed placement in July 2026.
  • Costs are set by an auction that weighs your bid, estimated action rates and ad quality, so better creative can lower what you pay.
  • Vertical 9:16 video built for Reels and Stories is the default creative for most campaigns.
  • Reliable tracking (Meta Pixel plus Conversions API) matters more than any targeting trick.

How Instagram ads work

You don’t buy Instagram ads in the Instagram app (except simple post boosts). You create a campaign in Meta Ads Manager, choose an objective such as Sales or Leads, set a budget and audience, and pick placements. Instagram is one group of placements alongside Facebook, Messenger, Threads and the Audience Network.

Since 2025 Meta has been unifying its automated campaign types. Instead of choosing between a separate “Advantage+ shopping campaign” and a manual campaign, sales and app campaigns now use one setup in which automation levers are switched on or off.

According to Meta’s developer announcement, a campaign is treated as Advantage+ when it uses Advantage+ campaign budget, Advantage+ audience in at least one ad set, and Advantage+ placements in every ad set. You can still restrict placements to Instagram only, but you give up some of the automation.

Instagram ad placements in 2026

Meta’s Marketing API documentation lists these Instagram positions: stream (Feed), Story, Explore, Explore home, Reels, profile feed, search results and profile reels. In July 2026 Meta also announced a change to Explore:

“Delivery to Explore will stop, and campaign spending will shift automatically to other eligible placements.”

Instagram creative can also carry into Threads: Meta’s API notes that the Threads feed placement requires the Instagram feed placement to be selected, and TechCrunch reported in January 2026 that Threads ads had rolled out to users worldwide.

Instagram ad formats

  • Single image – quick to produce; best for a clear product shot or offer.
  • Video – the main format for Reels and Stories; hook viewers in the first second or two.
  • Carousel – up to several swipeable cards; good for product ranges, step-by-step stories or before/after.
  • Collection – a cover image or video with products underneath, opening an Instant Experience; built for ecommerce.
  • Partnership ads – ads run through a creator’s handle with their permission, which often feel more native.
  • Lead ads – an in-app form so people can submit details without leaving Instagram.

Size guides from ad-tech vendors such as TheOptimizer recommend 1080×1350 (4:5) for feed and 1080×1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels, and note that primary text is truncated after about 125 characters on mobile. Keep logos and key text away from the top and bottom of vertical video, where the username, caption and buttons sit, and always check the safe-zone preview in Ads Manager.

How much do Instagram ads cost?

There is no rate card. Every impression is sold in an auction, and the ad that wins is the one with the highest “total value”, which combines three things:

  1. Your bid – set automatically by the bid strategy (highest volume, cost per result goal, ROAS goal or bid cap).
  2. Estimated action rate – how likely this person is to take the action you optimise for.
  3. Ad quality – based on feedback signals such as people hiding the ad, and on low-quality traits like engagement bait.

The practical lesson: you can lower costs without raising bids by making ads people actually want to watch. Other factors that push costs up include narrow audiences, seasonal competition (Q4 retail especially), weak landing pages and optimising for an event that rarely happens. We don’t publish a “typical” Instagram CPM or CPC here because public benchmarks vary widely by country, industry and objective; your own cost per click and cost per result after two to three weeks are the only numbers that matter. To judge whether those costs are acceptable, work back from your margins using return on ad spend and customer lifetime value.

How to set up an Instagram ad campaign (step by step)

  1. Connect your accounts. In Meta Business settings, link your Instagram professional account and ad account to your business portfolio.
  2. Install tracking. Add the Meta Pixel and, ideally, the Conversions API so purchases and leads are measured even when browser tracking is blocked. Tag links with UTM parameters so GA4 can report on Instagram traffic too.
  3. Choose an objective. Use Sales or Leads if you can measure them; Awareness or Engagement only when that’s genuinely the goal.
  4. Set budget and bidding. Start with highest volume, then add a cost per result goal once you know your numbers.
  5. Define the audience. Advantage+ audience with a few suggestions (customer lists, website visitors) is the usual starting point; add location, age and language controls only where legally or commercially required.
  6. Pick placements. Leave Advantage+ placements on, or choose Instagram placements manually if your creative only fits Instagram.
  7. Upload creative. Provide 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1 versions so each placement gets the right crop. Add 3–5 genuinely different concepts per ad set.
  8. Launch and leave it. Avoid editing during the learning phase; judge results after about a week of data.

Creative best practices

  • Hook fast. Show the product, problem or result in the opening frames.
  • Design for sound off and sound on. Use captions, but write Reels to work with audio.
  • Look native. Creator-style, phone-shot videos often outperform polished brand ads. See our guide to user-generated content.
  • One message per ad. Make the offer obvious and the call to action specific.
  • Test concepts, not colours. Different angles (price, social proof, demo, founder story) teach you more than button colours. Our ad copywriting guide covers angles in depth.
  • Refresh regularly. Watch frequency and falling click-through rates as signs of creative fatigue.

Measuring Instagram ad performance

Look past likes. The metrics that decide whether you scale are cost per result, conversion rate, ROAS and, for awareness, cost per thousand reach and video hold rate. Compare Ads Manager results with GA4 and your CRM, because each uses different attribution windows. Our guides to marketing attribution and social media analytics explain how to reconcile them.

Common mistakes

  • Boosting posts for sales. Boosts optimise for engagement by default; use Ads Manager with a conversion objective.
  • Repurposing horizontal TV ads. Letterboxed 16:9 video wastes most of a phone screen.
  • Too many ad sets with small budgets. Fragmented spend keeps campaigns stuck in learning.
  • No Conversions API. Pixel-only tracking under-reports, which starves the algorithm of signals.
  • Constant edits. Changing budgets and audiences daily resets learning.
  • Ignoring the landing page. A slow mobile page kills good ads; see PPC landing pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Instagram ads cost?

There is no fixed price. You set a daily or lifetime budget and Meta’s auction decides what each impression or result costs, based on your bid, how likely people are to act, and ad quality. Start with a budget big enough to get several conversions a week per ad set.

Do I need a Facebook Page to run Instagram ads?

Instagram ads are created in Meta Ads Manager, which is tied to a Meta business portfolio. You should connect your Instagram professional account so ads run under your handle and comments appear on your profile.

Which Instagram placement works best?

It depends on the creative. Vertical video built for Reels and Stories usually suits most campaigns, while feed works well for product images and carousels. Most advertisers let Advantage+ placements spread delivery and then review results by placement.

Can I boost a post instead of using Ads Manager?

Yes, boosting is the simplest option and is fine for reach or engagement. For sales or leads you get far more control over objectives, audiences, tracking and testing in Ads Manager.

Is the Explore placement still available?

Meta announced with Marketing API v26.0 (July 2026) that the Instagram Explore Feed placement will no longer be available, with spend shifting to other placements. Check Ads Manager for the current list before planning creative.

Conclusion

Instagram ads reward brands that treat creative as the main lever: native vertical video, clear offers, solid tracking and the patience to let Meta’s automation learn. Get those right and the auction works in your favour. If you would like experts to plan, produce and manage your campaigns, our social media management and PPC management teams can help.
